Australian Citizenship

The right to citizenship of Australia may be granted to permanent residents who have lived in Australia for the requisite period of time and meet all other requirements. People who have been granted citizenship enjoy the same rights and benefits as other Australian citizens, including the right to vote, work in the Australian Public Service or the Australian Defense Force, as well as the ability to obtain and use a passport. Citizens by conferral have the same rights and obligations as ordinary Australian citizens, including the right to serve on a jury and defend Australia if necessary. Authorities have cancelled in-person citizenship ceremonies (affecting persons who have completed their interview and whose applications have been approved) due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

During the COVID-19 crisis, councils around Australia have cancelled in-person citizenship ceremonies (affecting persons who have passed their interview and had their applications granted) and are currently holding them online.
