From 15 March 2016, there will be a priority visa consideration service fee for subclass 600 (visitor) visa applicants in either the Tourist or Business Visitor stream for Chinese nationals. The priority service is available for an additional fee of $1,000 on top of the visa application charge. The Department of Immigration has announced that it is trialling this priority service for eligible Chinese nationals.
This incentive comes from a recommendation of the Government’s White Paper on ‘Developing Northern Australia’ and aimed at making Australia a more attractive visitor destination and help grow the tourist economy including the northern parts of Australia.
However, the Department of Immigration states that there is no regulatory requirement that the application be decided by a particular timeframe despite the promise of priority processing and accepting the payment of $1,000. Considerations to character and health issues may contribute to a delay in the processing timeframe.
The applicant is entitled to no refund if the visa application fails unless the visa application charge is refunded. Invalid requests for this priority service, for example applicants holding passports not specified under the Regulation, would receive full repayment of the $1,000 fee. This priority service may be extended to other nationalities in the near future.
