PM Malcolm Turnbull, currently visiting China looking to strengthen economic ties with a focus on tourism and education, announced that a trial of 10-year tourist visa will start soon, although no details has been provided.
It has been over a year since the lengthy multi-entry tourist visa has been discussed. Also, to benefit Chinese visitors, the trial will for the first time allow for tourist visa applications to be lodged in Mandarin.
The trial is expected to boost tourist numbers particularly those of return visitors to Australia. This 10-year tourist visa program already lags behind USA, Canada and Britain, which have already moved to permanent 10-year, repeat-entry tourist visas for the Chinese.
To encourage further growth, Australia will not only relax its risk requirements and assessment procedures, but will also embark on a major tourism campaign.
